Our USA Adventure: Santa Fe to Silver City,New Mexico

Our USA Adventure: Santa Fe to Silver City,New Mexico

Yep, it is true, we have not posted to the blog for 2 weeks, but that’s because we are living this Adventure, and we have been on the move.  So, here is what has happened:

  • We left our Santa Fe, NM place (Trailer Ranch RV Park), after a final trip downtown (just to be sure all shopping was done), taking a trip across the town square, which was so pretty, and fall was coming on! Very cool weather and brisk winds.  This actually caused us to check our travel plans to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  The temperatures there were coming down into the teens and there was a potential for snow.  We changed our itinerary and were off to …..
  • Alamogordo, NM, to a sweet park (Alamagordo/White Sands KOA), with easy access to White Sands, which is a place we really wanted to visit. While in the park, we met a couple who said a “must see” is Cloudcroft NM, a small town up in the hills out of Alamogordo city proper, so what the heck, we decided to go ….. and glad we did!  There is an impressive tunnel on the way up to an amazing very old trestle, which is on the register of historic places.  This is the Mexican Canyon Trestle, dated 1899 and we were amazed at how it could have possibly been built.  Much wind up there, and worth the “bad hair day” outcome!
  • Gary had found that White Sands, NM had a ranger led Sunset Tour and we decided we could make it there by 5:15pm. Off we went from Cloudcroft!  We picked up our Lili, as we knew she would want to see the sunset of White Sands as well, and pets are welcome!  😊  AND, we were lucky enough to get the BEST RANGER, Ranger Brenna Rodrigues, who is also a Geologist.  She was just the most interesting person, sharing all the answers to anything you could ask about the White Sands.  First, you need to know White Sands is the world’s largest such desert; it measures 278 thousand square miles. She did a demo of how the white sands have water beneath the surface as little as 2 feet down!  Then she explained why the sands, even in summer months, are cool to walk upon.  And yes, we were walking bare-footed, and Lili too (of course).  The Sunset Tour is just beautiful, and hard to describe the colors of the mountain ranges and sand reflection.  Ranger Brenna Rodrigues is truly awesome.  We hope she writes a book about the area; we want to be one of the first to buy one!
  • Next we were off to Las Cruses, NM for a few days, on our way heading West to Tucson. We loved the KOA there.  Our spot was perfect!  This place sits on a hill, and at night-time you can see the city of Las Cruses all lit up.  It is beautiful!  The mornings are even prettier as you look out on the mountains and the sun rises.  AND, of course, we chose another adventure. It was:
  • Silver City, NM! We were looking to take in views of the Giga National Forest (pronounced “Hela”. Breathtaking forest lands are everywhere in this part of New Mexico.  The Silver City is a small berg located near one of the country’s largest open mining Copper Mines.  It is HUGE!  Our pictures don’t do it justice.  We honestly had no idea what an “open mining” active mine was all about, but now we do.  We also took an unbelievable drive into the Gila National Forest to see the Gila Cliff Dwellings, which date back to the 1200’s.  In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt, established Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument as the only National Park Service that interprets and preserves part of the Mogollon Cultural history.  Trails to the dwellings are unpaved, steep and uneven.  It is not a climb for the timid!  You walk in the footsteps of the Mogollon people who called the dwellings home.  Now I will tell you the drive up to the cliff dwellings is not for the faint of heart, and I must honestly admit to shedding a few tears of “what the heck are we doing?”  Thank heavens Gary is the best driver around and great at keeping me from climbing out of the truck.  We enjoyed our stay!  Got up the morning of 10/30, and headed to our winter place of Tucson.
  • Arrived in Tucson ……. And that will be demonstrated in our next adventure posting. What an adventure we are having!!!!!

Well, we are now 2 weeks from our last post, which ended at Elephant Butte, NM.  We elected to post every two weeks, when we stay at one location for a long period, and we were at Elephant Butte 1 month!  Hard to believe how that time went by, and we do believe it were to our new pals Gayla and Jim Burnett.  My what fun we had with them, and our times together were rich in conversation … just the best!  AND, their “pack-pal” Gus,  was really fun for Lili (and us too).  Lili would give Gus a “bark out hello” and Gus would interpret that as “game on”, which pleased Lili to no end.

The World Balloon Fest, we 4 spent a spectacular lift-off at the world attended Balloon Fest, in Albuquerque, NM.  We were up at 4:00 am!  I honestly didn’t plan on going, thought it would be a much over-rated event. You will find the pictures for this adventure, and honestly, they don’t do this once a year event, justice!  There were over 650 balloons, from all over the world; you could walk the grounds right up to these objects; touch the guide lines, touch the baskets ….. well, if you have never been, THIS IS A MUST!  We were all truly moved to tears.  Breathtaking!!!

We 4 made a decision and did our very first 2-Airstream Caravan!  First, we headed to the best Farmer’s Market, in Las Cruses, NM; then we gang member’s went on to Roswell, NM for an overnight stay.  Jim had prepared a home-made chicken soup for us to have for dinner, upon our arrival, and I swear Gary and I were in bed by 8:30 pm.  Next morning, a very fun fabulous breakfast was our destination, at the Cowboy Café.  This is a Roswell locals place (awesome omelets, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes!) Got back to our RV park, said our good-byes to great new buddies, Gayla and Jim, who were heading towards TX, and we headed back to the Carlsbad Cavern’s, to hike into the caves (rather than take the elevator, as we did the first trip, down to the bottom.)  Yep, we were missing our buddies all the way to the bottom of the caverns. We traveled down and down, marveling at the sites we had not seen before.  (You will see these pictures.) So glad we went back!  It was awesome, and a long way down. Exiting the caverns, we began the next part of our adventure to Santa Fe.  Traveled 205 miles, to Vaughn, NM and stayed in a truck stop, at 10:00 pm.  We were happy to find a spot next to the big-rigs!  Next morning, our legs let us know that the hike down to the bottom of the caverns is NOT FOR SISSIES!  We got ourselves up, with the big-rig drivers, and off we continued to our RV park in Santa Fe.

Our boy, Michael, had sent us a wonderful text about the Origami Garden and Sculpture Garden, outside of Santa Fe, and we made a decision to travel there.  It is about 20 miles S. of Santa Fe, and we were so happy we decided to stop!  We met the primary artist, and owner of the Box Studio, Kevin Box and his wife Jennifer. Truly a beautiful gallery, and we were blessed to see Kevin’s new work to soon be delivered to Washington DC.  I came away with 2 new pieces of sculpture ….. I’m so lucky!!! Our boy really sent us to a fabulous place!  Kevin’s artwork begins with paper Origami, then he translates the work into metal work.  I have a bronze acorn, and an equally fabulous blue bird.

Our USA Adventure – 4 weeks in Elephant Butte, NM

Our USA Adventure – 4 weeks in Elephant Butte, NM

Yes, we have now been 4 weeks in Elephant Butte and while this is a quite remote spot of New Mexico, we have seen and experienced much; we hope our pictures reflect this!  During the night times, we have spotted the space station soaring above – it is unmistakable in the skies and truly a joy to see; knowing our astronaughts are up there is awesome!  The sunsets here are beautiful, however, one can not stay out long due to the “man eating” gnats!  Oh yes they are, and we have proof but you would not want to see those pics 🙁 . It is said, however, that the gnats are only here for a brief window of time – it just happens to be the same time of the year we decided to come here.

We enjoyed a British Auto Rally right across from our park; it was such fun to see (but not touch!) the various cars.  Early morning golf at Sierra del Rio was awesome!  We played 9 holes as there was work being done on the back 9.  Such fun we had; yep, lost a couple of balls, but well worth the play. Elephant Butte Dam was great to see and it’s history is so interesting. Elephant Butte RV Resort is really a wonderful property.  Large spaces, friendly staff, nice pool area, exercise room, laundry ….. well, it is a wonderful spot.  And…oh yes, we know each aisle of Wallmart well!

We have included pictures of our family back home because we just can’t help ourselves!  Miss Lenna Rae, her daddy Nathan (our eldest Grandson), and her Grandpa Michael (our boy), and fun with Grandma “Bamma” Debbie. Their adventures back home are, of course, a part of our adventure as well!

We have met the Burnett’s, Jim and Gayla, and their Gus, and they are just fun to be around!  What have had so much fun with them and hope our adventures with them will continue!  We all share so much in common including that Gary and Jim both have a “man-crush” on Hugh Jackman😉.  Well, so do Gayla and I!!!!  As a matter of fact, who doesn’t? We’ve spent some great time talking, laughing, and sharing; we love their company.  Next week (on Saturday) we depart for our continued adventure, but we 4 will be staying in touch.

Next: Back to Carlsbad Caverns. But we just learned that we will be “caravaning” with Jim & Gayla to Roswell before dropping down to visit the Caverns again… that is, if we don’t get “beamed up” first! Stay tuned!!!

Our USA Adventure – Week 13 (?)

Our USA Adventure – Week 13 (?)

Our USA Adventure – Week 13 (?)

Our USA Adventure – Week 13 (?) – G. W. Bush Center and Carlsbad Caverns

So I didn’t really count the weeks but it seems about right and there’s some poetry to calling it “Week 13” since yesterday was Friday the 13th and we’re in Roswell, NM with aliens all around us (the kind made of wood and resin, of course)! But, I’m not blogging about that this week – that comes next week! This blog is about the George W Bush Presidential Center in Dallas and about Carlsbad Caverns!

We visited the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas on Friday, Spetember 7th. Maybe because the date was so close to the anniversary of 9/11 or maybe not, but it was a very emotional experience for us both. There was an entire exhibit room with videos and phots dedicated to September 11, 2001 and the events following. I know this is controversial territitory and I don’t want to offend anyone, but I came away with a sense that President Bush was a very great president. There it is.

The Carlsbad Caverns were a truly awesome experience! The photos don’t begin to capture what its like to be down that far (the elevator decends 750 feet!) and see such wonders of nature, lighted with special attention to displaying the formations to the best effect. We only spent a couple of hours there, and we want to go back – possibly even on this trip!

Thanks for checking our blog! Have a great week!

Our USA Adventure – Visiting Cousin Karen in Slidell, Louisianna

I posted a few pictures of our time with Karen in the last edition, but that didn’t nearly cover our time together, and I wanted to have a special blog just about that visit, so here it is. For non-family who may not know the history, Karen is the daughter of my Uncle Bill and Aunt Aileen Collins – Bill was my Mom’s brother, undoubtedly her favorite brother, too. As kids, my Sis, Judy, and I spent some wonderful times vacationing with Karen’s family and the memories are very special, and this visit was no exception. Pat & I will cherish the short time we spent with Karen forever! What a blast! And despite her angst about going into New Orleans after a close call there some time back, she took us for a fantastic ride thru The City on our last day together!

Anyway, enough of my blabbering… the pics say it better, anyway! Next up, Texas!

Our USA Trip – Week 11-12: The Natchez Trace to Slidell, LA

Our USA Adventure – The Natchez Trace to Slidell, LA

Leaving the busy area of Nashville for several days of driving down the Natchez Trace was like walking out of a big party into the quiet forest nearby! The Trace runs from the “Terminus” at Mile 444 just below Nashville (near Franklin) all the way to the Origin, Mile 0, at Natchez, MS. We did the whole thing!! Along the way, we spent a night at Tishomingo State Park, Tishomingo, MS; next 2 nights at The Natchez Trace RV Park, Tupelo, MS (the Birthplace of Elvis); then on to Springridge RV Park, Clinton, MS; and our last night at Riverview RV Park, Vidalia, LA, right on the Mississippi River! We wish we had had more time for this last stop as it was truly beautiful with iconic views of the Mississippi River and the tugs and barges coming and going there! The Trace is not just beautiful, it is also rich in history. We can honesstly say we stopped at more “Historical Markers” than we thought possible. We are anxious to come back and spend more time on the Trace at some future time. It is amazing!

So, the lead photo is of two of our 4 (soon to be 5!!) Great Grans, Josie and River at a Portland Timbers Soccer Game – their first time at a Soccer match! I think they might be having a good time?? Oh, you’ll also see their Dad, Cameron, holding his first Chinook Salmon! Yay, Cam!!!
