WHERE HAVE THOSE BURKE’S BEEN?

Our apologies for the delay in updating our blog!  Here’s a quick recap:

  • We left Rincon West in Tuscon on 3/23/20 heading East to Texas via two favorite locations:
    • Roswell, NM – Found we had not seen nearly all of Roswell, so that was fun.
    • White Sands National Park (formerly National Monument); it was closed due to the pandemic but we spent a couple of days in Alamogordo anyway.
  • We moved on towards Texas, intending to stay at six of the state parks that had been recommended by our buddies, Jim and Gayla, but after visiting the first one the state parks were closed down by their governor due to the pandemic. ☹
  • That first Texas State park was awesome, however: Caprock Canyon was totally beautiful; the canyon is beautiful – like a small Grand Canyon; there were bison all over the place, even in our campground!
  • Our buddies, Jim and Gayla, met up with us at Buckhorn RV Resort in Kerrville, TX. It’s an awesome park and we loved it and want to go back there. We saw so many of the sights in the area: The Enchanted Rock, Garner State Park (opened for day use only while we were there), The Cross of the Coming King Prayer Garden (left some prayer rocks there), Fredericksburg where the National Museum of the Pacific War was fantastic), and the wildflowers were blooming… the hill country of Texas is truly beautiful.  Oh, did I mention we also made it through 2 tornado alerts?  High winds and rain …. But no hail hit us (thank heavens).  Found out that three days after we left they did have another tornado alert and golf-ball-size hail hit Buckhorn.  Got out just in time!
  • Left Buckhorn for Vidalia, Louisiana. Shortly after we arrived at River View RV Park in Vidalia, the weather folks began warning of tropical storm Cristobal, soon to become a hurricane, Cristobal. We left a couple of days earlier than planned since the hurricane was headed in our direction. We moved out the same day it came ashore and headed up through Mississippi ahead of the storm.  In Leland, MI, we got the rains and wind but were out of the dangerous flooding area.
  • We visited Memphis, TN., staying at the Graceland RV park right across from Graceland. We decided to take the tour of Graceland and were so glad we did! However, Elvis was not there.
  • Leaving Memphis, we stayed a couple of days in Nashville, then continued North and visited the Mammoth Caves National Park in Kentucky, the largest caverns in the world. They are breathtaking!  We took lots of pictures.  We visited Carlsbad Caverns last year and were very impressed; Mammoth Caves are different but still so incredibly beautiful!  A must-see.

We are now in Wapakoneta, Ohio. We dropped the CTYII (Close to You II, the name we gave the Airstream) at the factory in Jackson Center, Ohio. We are missing it! Staying in a hotel is not the same for us as it was pre-CTYII ☹. It is getting fixed up and a couple of additions are being made.  We hope to pick it up within a week.

Yes, as you can see, we have spent April, May, and most of June making it here to the Airstream Factory: over 2,000 miles! We have gone through tornado trials; outrun a hurricane; dealt with the pandemic situation (and still doing that), and stayed as safe as we could while still taking in as much of this fabulous country as we could. You know what? We live in a wonderful country (warts and all), and the people we have met along the way are really awesome!

You will see pictures of our entrepreneurial great-grandbabies and their folks back home:

  • You will see that our Josie and River set up an ice cream service, and have learned how to drive!
  • Miss Lenna Rae and Wyatt are considering going for the “big rigs” and are trying their hand at driving them!
  • Ezra is growing like weed just as he should be, and marveling at this big brother River, and big sister Josie!
  • Cam invested in a new boat! I can’t wait to hear about the adventures this will bring!

WAPAKONETA, OHIO

We are staying in Wapakoneta, OH.  It is a very sweet town with a beautiful old-town area. It is also the home town of astronaut Neil Armstrong (the first man to land and walk on the moon, 1969) and the site of the Neil Armstrong Museum.  We visited both and loved them.  The museum is more than just seeing pictures of the moon and his rocket; it is about his life and life of other astronauts.  We found he began flying at 15 years of age; preferred flying over riding his bike!  We also were so surprised to see pictures of all the astronauts who have come out of Ohio! We loved the museum and the old town area!

Downtown Wapakoneta is truly one of our MOST FAVORITE places in the United States!  The people are so very engaging and we loved talking with them.  We met Debbie Fisher who writes for the local newspaper and is also one of the most outstanding and enthusiastic people you can imagine. She is a huge promoter of Wapakoneta and loves to speak about its history and what is being done to re-energize the community.  We loved meeting her and you will see her in our pictures.  We do love this town, and we fully intend to come back.  Oh, and there are wonderful places to eat like “J. Marie” and an awesome ice cream and shake shop, Max’s.  Had a totally awesome Strawberry milkshake.

WAPAKONETA, YOU ROCK!!!!    We are raving fans.

Yes, we are continuing on our adventure, and loving it!  Well, not all the time, but MOST of the time, for sure!

Enjoy all our pictures… they are just a sampling!

BURKE ADVENTURE TIME – DURING THE Corona Virus Pandemic – April 2020

My-oh-my, where do we begin?  Well, we first left our winter spot, at Rincon West, Tucson, AZ. on 3/23, heading east to meet up with some buddies, visit several Texas state parks, and eventually move on to Ohio to the Jackson Center Airstream Factory for some Airstream repair work and additions (e.g., a second A/C unit).  Who knew we would be caught up in the Global Pandemic? Anyway, some changes had to be made to our itinerary and fast!

Right now, upfront, we can’t say enough, not now, not ever, about the support and love from our family.  Our son, Michael, is a true life-line!  He continues to share with us what he is hearing on the news and what he is concerned about. He asks us GREAT questions, and his sharing is more than we could ever have asked for, not in this lifetime!  What a hero he is to us.  Our Grandsons Nathan, Dylan, and Cameron have also been a wonderful support in this difficult time: they all have shared text pictures of their family fun and adventures! They have FaceTimed and Zoomed (oh, and now, Google Duo’d) with us! Honestly, it makes our hearts smile! Our sister Judy and brother Jim have been another solid support to us in this weird era. Their calls and FaceTime with us mean more than they will ever know!  We know there are many folks who wish they were connected as closely to their family… WE ARE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL FOR OURS!  When you are traveling in truly uncertain times, this family connection keeps you moving forward with courage and hope! Grateful is what we are!

So we left Rincon West (Tucson) on March 23rd, planning to make our way to Texas in a few days and then tour a group of Texas State Parks recommended to us by our Texan friends, Jim & Gayla Burnett.  Alas, that was not to be… but I got ahead of myself. Our trip from Tucson to Kerrville included:  Fort Wilcox RV, AZ (overnight); Alamagordo KOA (3 nights – we had hoped to take in the White Sands National Park, but it was closed!);  Caprock Canyon State Park, in Quitaque, TX. (pronounced Kitty Kay, TX. – 3 nights); the Old Town Cotton Gin RV Park (Quanah, TX. – 7 nights); Whistle Stop RV Park (Abilene, TX – 1 night); then on to Buckhorn Lake RV Resort in Kerrville, Texas.

We followed our planned itinerary as far as Caprock Canyon. It is a truly beautiful park with great canyons (somewhat like the Grand Canyon only smaller), bison everywhere (some walked right through our campground!), and wonderful trails surrounded by immense fields of wildflowers. However, there was no wifi or Verizon phone coverage. Not being able to connect with our remote world just didn’t work for us, both personally and work-wise. So, reluctantly, we made the decision to cancel our plan to visit the other state parks, thinking rightly or wrongly,  they would likely have the same connectivity issues. Shortly after we canceled, the Texas governor shut down all Texas State Parks, so our decision was timely.

As we were looking at our maps to figure out where to go next, having canceled the State Parks, our buddies, Jim and Gayla, called and recommended Buckhorn Lake RV Resort in Kerrville, where they had enjoyed a wonderful stay last year. It sounded so good we called and made our reservation for 30 days. Then we got a call back from J&G saying they had decided to go there, too! We arrived on April 8th, a few days after our friends, and we have now decided to stay until May 24th, when we pick up our original plan, moving on toward our June 24th appointment in Jackson Center Ohio.

That’s a whole lot of information but we want you all to know we are here, safe and sound, and our “hunker-down” time and location have been good.  The park is beautiful; the people/guests here are mostly following the guidelines for staying home and staying safe:  we go out with masks on and stay mindful of staying 6 feet apart from folks!  It is now April 30th and we are hearing that things are beginning to open up. We are hopeful that the nation and world will remember to thank those who do so much to protect us:  the first responders; all the medical people; the people who bring us news to keep us informed; those who protect us; and our families who keep reminding us we are loved! We are loving the creativity being shown by our family and others around the world, as they deal with this! Their out of the box thinking makes us laugh and smile, deep down… and keeps us filled with hope!

Our pictures here focus on where we are staying in Texas – Kerrville.  It is in the “Hill Country” of Texas. We had no idea how beautiful it could be here.  We hope you enjoy what we have been seeing.  We will catch up on our blog with pictures of the places we have stayed while traveling here from Tucson. That will come later in a special blog edition.

Thank you all for understanding the gap between our leaving Tucson, AZ. to Texas.  We hope you are still following us! We love you all, friends, and family! The 3 Burkes (of course we include Lili!)

Tucson January – February 2020

Tucson January – February 2020

Tucson January – February 2020

Tucson Still…. the end of Winter approaches 🙂

We can hardly believe we are soon to be out of AZ and back on the road, pursuing our on-going adventure!  Yes, we were in LazyDays KOA during November and December, then we tried out a new park, Rincon Country West RV Resort, for January, February and part of March.

Rincon West (there is a Rincon East, too, but we haven’t seen it yet)  is a lovely park with lots (and we do mean LOTS) of excellent activities, as well as a wonderful staff and great amenities – huge pools, at least 8 Pickle Ball courts, several dog exercise areas, two hot tubs, many club areas for various activities such as sewing and/or knitting, woodshop, ceramics, card playing, and a very large library! We have found both the “Homies” (Park Model Dwellers) and the “Wanderers” (like us) to be very welcoming and friendly. There are other types of clubs too that you can participate in: hiking, biking, dancing, acting, and so forth, as well as groups for taking trips to events and venues outside the park!   We believe it is a spot worth exploring.

We have admit, though, that our first month here at Rincon has been mostly occupied with getting insurance coverages changed, sorting out how and where to get our “bent” axle fixed (Gary has the patience of Job), and preparation for tax time (Pat handles this one, Thank You, God)! It is amazing how such things can fill your time! However, we have managed to meet a number of folks, both Homies and Wanderers, and attended some events, including a special Corgi gathering in one of the exercise areas, with our Lili, and also a Pot Luck Dinner with other folks from Oregon (each state or region if there aren’t enough folks to justify one for each state in the region) has a Pot Luck every so often, apparently. So, before we realized it, it was time to get some pictures posted and update this blog.

The pictures we have attached are NOT ALL we have taken, of course, but we wanted to be sure you saw  some of the sweet happenings and caught you up on things happening with our travel adventure as well as our family adventures back home.

  • We have had our kids, Son Michael and our Debbie, our terrific daughter-in-law, come to their home in Green Valley, only 25 minutes from Rincon. We had such fun with them, and seeing their faces meant more to us than they can ever imagine! The weather was so crazy we didn’t get a chance to play golf with Michael, but we reserve the right to threaten him with that again!
  • We had a “Domino Game Fest” with our extended family, Debbie’s mom Donna and her guy Art. Yes, score was kept, but… we will not go into that!!!!! We had fun meal-times, and enjoyed just hanging with them!
  • We have done some fun excursions into and around the Tucson, AZ area, you will see some of those pictures. We have biked, power walked, and driven …. It is all fun.
  • We have experienced several “firsts” while in the winter months here.
    • Lili now attended her first, out of Oregon, Corgi gathering, and it was huge, huge fun. She loved meeting new pals, especially Tucker who could be her brother, they look so much alike! There were about 7 or 8 Corgis in all, and they had a blast! She also met Rusty, a King Cavalier, and they got along beautifully!  Each time they meet she begins with a “bark-out” hello, then they just both smile.  We swear they do.
    • Speaking of Rusty, his mom and dad are Sandy and Dan. We loved meeting them and finding that we share much in common, including being from Oregon.  They are on their first full-time adventure having sold their place in Bend, Oregon.  As the four of us talked, we discovered that both couples had plans to be in Nova Scotia later in the year, so we are hoping to meet up sometime next Fall in Canada, perhaps on Prince Edward Island.  Its amazing how quickly the time passes when you are with good friends! We also are hoping we can talk our dearest buddies Gayla and Jim, into joining us on that adventure! We’ll see!!  That would be just the BEST, and well, I am practicing my best sales pitch for them.  We can’t say enough about our friendship with Gayla, Jim and of course Gus!  (WISH ME WELL.)

  • Lili now has her own limo, that we call the Lili Limo, of course! She has what we found out is a fairly common genetic condition in many dog breeds. It is called Degenerative Myelopathy. It affects the spinal column and makes it difficult for her to walk long distances, hence the “Limo”. She loves it. We take her on long walks as well as bike rides!
  • Wyatt, Dylan and Kelly’s baby boy, had his first birthday in February. The pictures of him and his birthday gave us BIG SMILES probably extended our lives based on the way they made our hearts feel!
  • Josie got her first visit from the Tooth Fairy! Yes, she has officially lost her first tooth as you will see in the pictures below!
  • You will also see some really cute snapshots of our other Great Grands, Miss Lenna, River and Ezra. We are truly blessed!

The lives of our family back in Oregon are busy and moving along, as we know very well.  For sure, the hardest part of living out our adventure is not being around to witness all the fantastic changes as the family grows and develops and not being there to be a part of the physical and moral support system for our family! But between calls home, face-timing, and writing notes out to all, we are staying connected.  That is so important to us and we will continue to do all we can to stay connected as we continue our adventure!

We are off next to New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and …… who knows! Those are just what we have planned out until June.  We are very excited.

We are thrilled to be meeting up with the buddies we met in New Mexico:  Gayla and  Jim, and of course, Gus, their dog!  We’ve stayed connected and now we will be sharing some camping time along the way –  we can hardly wait to see and be with them…..especially Gus! 😊 We call one another, face-time, and truly, they are our buddies for life!

We leave Rincon West on March 23rd.  We may be back next year or we may be on an adventure to another place. We’ve decided not to reserve our space here yet, even at the risk of not being able to get one next year. It will be as it will be.  We want to get back to updating our blog once a month like we were doing before while on the road.  Time has just been speeding on.  We love it still, oh yes we do!

Update From Tucson!

Hard to believe:  We landed back in Tucson, at Lazydayz RV, a spot we have always loved, in November, and wrote about that spot and our happenings.  NOW WE ARE INTO THE END OF 2019 AND INTO THE 2020 year.  How can that be?  You may be asking that, and we are too!!!

You will see pictures of what happened in December and January to our lives.  The time passing is hard to believe – we have been doing so much, but here is a snapshot:

  • We surprised our son and daughter-in-law and family with a quick one week visit to them the first week in December, so that they would see our faces and so we could hold them! We saw Michael and Debbie’s new condominium; heard in real time how they all were; talked with old friends. They were all our Christmas Gift!  No one knew we were coming … it was PERFECT!
  • We saw our Great Grandson, River, celebrate his 2nd birthday!
  • We saw how happy our family is, and better yet, that they haven’t forgotten us!
  • We saw our Starbuck’s gang at the Sunnyside Town Center store…..they are truly the best Starbuck’s anywhere we have visited in the USA. Yes, we speak from experience and from our hearts!
  • We connected up with pals by phone and in person: I got to talk with my long time pal and work buddy Christi Karvasek – wow we go back over 20 years; and I had a great talk with the most talented engineering leader around and my personal buddy, Rebecca Campbell.
  • We went back to our townhome in Happy Valley and spent an entire week packing up all our home belongings, placing them into storage, and preparing for our next tenants. (There was huge interest in our place but most wanted the home unfurnished. We wanted a long term lease in order to free us for nearly full-time living in our Airstream. Guess what happened?  The very day the mover’s were there a man came by to check it out and… he and his family will be the people who will be living here.  What a true pleasure to meet them.)
  • You will see pictures of our Christmas morning! Gary always makes us a German Pancake, and it was JUST THE BEST!
  • On January 1st, 2020 we moved from Lazydays KOA to Rincon Country West RV Resort. Look for pics of our first sunset there in our new space.  We are here until March 23. Then, these “Road Warriors” will be on the road to Texas and other points we will be writing about.
  • You will see some shots of our crazy Sunday morning in downtown Tucson at the Dillinger Day’s Celebration, which is truly just a hoot! People all over the city in vintage clothing.  We knew nothing about this occasion, but we will from now on!

So… that’s it in a nutshell!  May not seem like much, but it has been a true whirlwind for two months. Surprising family, loving on them, packing up our home, moving locations here in Tucson, setting plans for our up-coming adventures…  what a way to end 2019 and welcome in 2020!  We are full-timing it now in our Airstream. We love our home on wheels! We will know when it is time to stop and settle for a bit in one location or move on to another location.  We do know we are headed for Texas, then Arkansas, then Kansas, then Utah, then …..well, we ultimately will be in the east for the fall colors.

Bye for now! More to come next month, we promise!  Hope you enjoy the pictures!

In Tucson at Last!

In Tucson at Last!

In Tucson at Last!

Not all who Wander are Lost… Right?

Have you been asking, “Where the heck have those Burke’s been for an entire month”? Of course you have! Hasn’t everyone?  We have tried our best to post an update every 2-weeks on our adventure, right? Okay!! Here it is in a nutshell:

  • We left Silver City, NM heading towards Tucson where we were to reside for most of the winter months. And yes, we did do that: arrived in Tucson, AZ at the Tucson Lazydays KOA on the 30st of October. But instead of checking into our reserved spot for the winter, we took a bit of a delay to have our Airstream looked at. So, we drove directly into the Airstream Service area only to find we had a bowed axel!!!!  ☹  Not too happy of campers, but then again, we are on an adventure and… things happen on an adventure that aren’t part of the plan, right?
  • We found out that we needed to have some work done but we decided that, since the CTYII would be our home for the winter, we would wait to have that axel repair done. What the heck is a “bowed axel” anyway, and how did that happen? All we knew was that one of our tires had extensive wear while all three others were fine. The repair shop did some measurements and determined the “spindle” (part on the end of the axle) was out of true. We knew we wanted to swap the current set of tires for ones with a better rating, so we went ahead with that for the time being. We’ll worry about the axle after Christmas. We are now officially in our reserved Lazydays KOA space and happy to be back.
  • Our boy Michael and our daughter-in-law, Debbie, arrived for a stay (came from Portland, OR.) and we swept them up from the airport in Tucson. But before they arrived, we were treated to music by a fabulous jazz duo, singing and playing the keyboard close to the baggage claim area! Well, it was like having a private show! They were magnificent! We spotted our kids, and off we went to take them to their home in Green Valley, about 20 miles from Tucson.  We had not seen them since June! We so love our kids, we could hardly let go of them at the airport!  We took them back to the CTYII (about 5 min. from the airport), then they drove their car on home to Green Valley to settle in after their travels.
  • Now, some great things we have done, while our kids were here for a week:
    • You will see pictures of our first golf game of the year with our son. Such outrageous fun!  Only lost three golf balls and honestly, that isn’t bad for us!
    • We had a fabulous adventure to the Kitt Peak Observatory, which if you haven’t done is truly AWESOME! Gary, Michael and I had such fun! We had no idea how expansive the observatory was – there are a whole bunch of telescopes there!  We had a tail-gate picnic at in the parking lot, then went in for a ranger talk and walked to the #3 observatory.  There are 4 showings a day, each at a different telescope. We all want to go back and take in the rest.
  • We had to bid farewell to our kids after a week of fun, food and adventures ….. and well, we were a bit tearful, we admit. They are the BEST!!!
  • We said good by to our son Mike, daughter-in-law Debbie, then we were off 3 days later for our Thanksgiving tradition with Gary’s sister, Judy, and her hubby, Jim. Could hardly wait to see them. The tradition includes: Thanksgiving dinner with them and their dear friends, Lynette and Jody; then, the day after Thanksgiving, we all decorate the Christmas Tree! They are having friends over for Pinochle, so we were glad we could help get the party rolling by helping with the decorations!

And then… Oh my gosh, a major cold front came in!  We had ripping winds and temperatures that dipped into the 20’s.  (Remember, we just came from Tucson, AZ.  😊).  Anyhoo, the biggest surprise was a snow storm with nearly 4” of snow sticking to the ground on Thanksgiving Day!  Truly, it was beautiful! The mountains surrounding the city of Ridgecrest were snow covered right down to the desert floor. You can see our pictures of that – it was so beautiful, though, the pictures don’t begin to capture it.  Our Thanksgiving Day dinner with Jim & Judy and their friends, Lynette and Jody was truly joyous! It concluded with a vicious game of a variation of Mexican Train Dominos!  All I can say is, the rules should state that the highest score wins, right??  Got to get them to change those dang rules!  Can you guess who got the high score?  Well, it was almost a tie between Jim and Judy… quite unusual; we need to check those rules.

  • Had awesome Thanksgiving talks and texts with our kids and our grandsons, Nathan, Dylan and Cameron, and our buddies Jim and Gayla. We have much to be thankful for, for sure!
  • After tree trimming and movie seeing (“It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” – Highly Recommended!) with Judy and Jim, we were back on the road back to Tucson. We took a little side-trip adventure to Yuma, AZ, which we had never seen prior, just to check it out. Got a little lost on poorly marked roads so it took us a bit longer than expected to find Yuma.  BUT WE ARE ON AN ADVENTURE REMEMBER! After a night’s stay at the Ramada, we found the Starbucks, and headed back on Hwy. 8 to Tucson.
  • We are missing our family! We love keeping in contact with them but it’s a challenge on both sides! That’s the hard part of adventuring. So what is next?
  • Okay here is the scoop and the full scoop! We will be wintering here at the Tucson Lazydays KOA. While we’re here, we will be having regular adventures on our bikes, and hiking, playing Pickle Ball, and just taking in the lovely country here. AND, we will be updating our blog monthly with our adventures, complete with pictures.  So, don’t be giving up on us!  As all of you know by now (you should know, anyway😉 ) we sometimes change our minds about what we are doing, just because… we can!  SO… stay tuned!!!!
